Walk 24: Amroth to Tenby

Our first Wales Coast Path walk of 2023 was also our first walk on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. Having finished the previous years’ walking with a shorter walk than anticipated, we had another short one ahead of us, as we completed the route to Tenby.

Bertie the Seabass at Amroth Beach

Keen to get the year off to a good start, we walked on a sunny January day. Although we had beautiful weather, the paths are always very muddy by the time January comes around, so we were glad to be stepping back onto the Wales Coast Path tentatively, with an easy seven-and-a-half-mile walk.

Having stayed in Tenby the previous night, we jumped on the bus to Amroth in the morning. The walk began with a stroll above Amroth Beach, and our eyes were immediately drawn to a pretty fish sculpture – Bertie the Seabass – who was constructed with stainless steel and filled with discarded plastic as part of a campaign to turn the tide on plastic.

Saundersfoot Beach

We continued along the road, heading round to Wiseman’s Bridge, another lovely coastal spot. After passing Wiseman’s Bridge, we walked along a promenade which led to a tunnel, passing through to Saundersfoot. We had already spent a bit of time in Saundersfoot during our stays in Wales the previous summer, so were familiar with its beautiful, sandy beach, which we walked along next, before grabbing an unseasonal ice cream as we left the beach. Although it’s great for a swim, we gave the sea a miss this time!

Tenby

After leaving the beach, the path took us up the road and along a wooded path, heading towards Monkstone Beach. After enjoying glimpses of the beach, we walked through a series of fields, where we got our first peek of Tenby, which wasn’t looking quite as colourful as usual due to the grey weather, but was still a very pleasing view!

Tenby

A bit more woodland walking and a stroll down the road, and we arrived into Tenby, with more lovely views of the town’s iconic colourful houses to enjoy to finish off our walk! We walked around the town, along the high street and past Castle Hill, and to our car, where we finished our first walk of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path – a great start to the year!

🥾 Distance: Seven-and-a-half miles.

⭐ Highlight: Some lovely views and lovely beaches!

👎 Less Good: A grey January day is never going to offer the ideal walking weather!

🚗 Transport: We got the bus from Tenby to Amroth at the beginning of our walk and walked back to our hotel in Tenby.

🛏️ Accommodation: We stayed at Heywood Spa Hotel, just outside the centre of Tenby, where we had a lovely, comfortable stay.

🌱 Food: We enjoyed a delicious dinner at Umi in Tenby.

🗺️ Map: This route is featured in the official Pembrokeshire guide.
