Walk 23: Pendine to Amroth
The walk from Pendine to Amroth was our last in Carmarthenshire, and marked our arrival at the much-loved Pembrokeshire Coast Path. It was also our last walk of 2022, completed during a September weekend stay in Tenby. We unintentionally walked this one backwards, starting in Amroth and finishing in Pendine, and it was one of our shortest walks, at just over five miles.

On the morning of our walk, we caught a bus from Tenby, which usually runs all the way to Pendine. Unfortunately, I had read the bus timetable incorrectly, and the bus we’d got on only ran to Amroth. With an hours’ wait until the next bus, we decided to alight in Amroth and walk to Pendine.
Having eyeballed the map and estimated that the walk from Amroth to Pendine was shorter than it actually was, I did think we might be able to reach Pendine in time to catch the bus back to Amroth, which was due just over an hour later, to then complete our walk. This was incredibly unrealistic, and just meant that we rushed the walk a little and then had a long wait for the next bus when we reached Pendine!

After we got off the bus, we walked along the road alongside the beach until we reached a sign which marked the start of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. We began to make our way up a hill along the road, but for some reason, we just didn’t feel confident that we were still on the Wales Coast Path. We went back to the Pembrokeshire Coast Path marker, scrambled down some pebbles to the sand, and walked a short distance from Amroth Beach to Telypyn Beach, where we found an exit point to take us back onto the coast path.
By happy accident, when we reached the path, we spotted a sign in the direction we’d come from informing walkers that the section we’d just avoided was closed due to a landslip, so our error actually meant we avoided having to turn back further along the path or take an even longer detour!

The path then followed the brow of the hill with stunning beach views to our right – there are so many hidden gems along this section of the Carmarthenshire Coast Path! There were a few ups and downs as we went, but these were well worth it for the beautiful outlook.
As we reached Teague’s Wood, the path zig-zagged downwards, before taking us into the woods where we crossed a stream, before heading back up onto the cliff path.

We continued along to Ragwen Point, where we looked behind us to see the stunning Marros Sands. After walking alongside the Taf Estuary for our past few walks, this stretch felt really lovely and coastal, giving us a taste of what was to come on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path.

Between Ragwen Point and Gilman Point we passed a small cove with another pretty beach. There really is no need to go abroad to find a beautiful beach – there are so many in the UK!
We had one more hill to navigate before we got to Gilman Point, where we were able to look down to the seven-mile-long Pendine Sands. The tide was much lower than it was at the end of our last walk, and it was vast.

The climb down was lovely, and although we’d inevitably missed our bus, we did make good time – it took us less than two hours to walk five quite hilly miles. Unfortunately, we had a while longer to wait for the next bus, but we were very hungry, so we ordered a pizza and considered our next move. We did attempt to book a taxi, which we would have got back to Amroth to continue our walk, but everybody we spoke to was fully booked. By the time we got the bus at 4:30pm, it felt a bit late in the day and we were flagging, so we ended up taking it all the way back to Tenby.
Although this wasn’t the walk we’d planned, it felt fitting to finish the year at Amroth, ready to take on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path in 2023!
🥾 Distance: Just over five miles. ⭐ Highlight: The stunning views throughout. 👎 Less Good: We rushed it a bit, as we'd read the bus timetable wrong! 🚗 Transport: We got the bus from Tenby to Amroth in the morning, and Pendine to Tenby in the evening. 🛏️ Accommodation: We stayed at Imperial Hotel Tenby, where we enjoyed stunning beach views but a slightly strange stay in a very dated room which was, if this is possible, too big. 🌱 Food: We tucked into pizza from Café on the Beach in Pendine. 🗺️ Map: This route is featured in the official Carmarthen Bay and Gower guide. |
